The Awty School was founded in 1956 as a pre-school by Mrs. Kathleen Awty. The incorporation of an Upper School in 1975 changed the school into a college preparatory school which merged with the French School of Houston and became the Awty International School in 1984. With a total enrollment of over 1,300 students, Awty is currently the largest private school in the city of Houston and the second largest international school in the United States.
Enrollment has increased from 400 to 1,300 over the last fifteen years. Recent additions include a new pre-school facility in 1990, a new upper school science building in 1991, additional pre-school classrooms in 1995, and a new upper school building including a computer center, foreign language laboratories and a new library in 1996. Construction was completed on a new performing arts and athletic center in 1998. A new classroom wing opened in the fall of 1999 and a new Lower School building opened in 2003. In the spring of 2009, the school opened a new Athletic Stadium which includes a soccer field, track, and tennis courts.
Awty is accredited by ISAS, CIS and the French Ministry of Education, affiliated with the Mission Laïque Française, and a member of NAIS. The academic program of the school prepares students for the French Baccalauréat or the International Baccalaureat, and offers an American diploma. All students take a second language: English, French or Spanish. There are native-language programs in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Dutch and Norwegian.
The faculty comes from over 30 different countries. Most language teachers are native speakers of the languages.
The student body is 40% American and 30% French. The remaining 30% represent over 50 nationalities. Graduates attend universities in the US, Canada, Latin America, Australia, the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
The school is located on a 15-acre (61,000 m2) campus in central Houston. Premises include 105 classrooms, six science laboratories, three art rooms, four computer laboratories, three libraries, 2 lunch rooms, two covered basketball/volleyball courts, an athletics center, two soccer fields and three gymnasiums.
